Recently, Nippon Shokubai announced that its subsidiary Nippon Shokubai Indonesia (NSI) will build a super absorbent polymer (SAP) plant with a capacity of 50,000 tons/year in Cilegon, Indonesia. The plant is scheduled to start operations in July 2027, with an investment of US$110 million. After the completion of the project, NSI's total SAP capacity will reach 140,000 tons/year.

Nippon Shokubai opened a 100,000 tons/year acrylic acid (AA) plant in Cilegon last year. Nippon Shokubai said the company can take advantage of vertically integrated production from acrylic acid to SAP to meet strong SAP demand growth in Asia and create synergies with existing plants.

Previously, Nippon Shokubai announced that it would stop operating its old and inefficient SAP plant in Himeji to optimize its future global SAP supply network.
