Tariffs on Chinese imports will harm the competitiveness of the EU coatings industry.

CEPE urges member states to reject the European Commission (EC) proposal to impose anti-dumping duties on titanium dioxide (TiO2) imported from China. TiO2 is a core raw material for coatings manufacturers, accounting for 40% of the cost of raw materials and 20% of the cost of finished products. These tariffs threaten the viability of the €33 billion per year EU coatings industry, which employs more than 150,000 people.

In July 2024, the European Commission imposed temporary tariffs on TiO2 imports from China for six months, and member states will vote on the latest proposal next week.
