On July 22, 2024, SS Royal Kit Emirates Investment, a UAE-based company, and Global Biopolymers Industries (GBI), a Hong Kong-based company, joined forces to form a new joint venture, Emirates Biotech, headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with plans to produce and market polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradable plastics in the Middle East, Africa and India.

The cooperation agreement was signed by Theodorus Everwijn on behalf of Global Biopolymer Industries, and by Shaikh Suhail Ali Saeed Rashed Al-Maktoum and Dr. Shadi Jabari on behalf of SS Royal Kit Emirates Investment and the investment company in the MENA region, which has investments in a range of different fields including biotechnology.

Emirates Biotech, formerly known as Gulf Biopolymers Industries, will be headquartered in Dubai and plans to establish a PLA production facility in the Kaizad Free Zone in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Under a 50-year lease agreement, GBI will establish a 30,000 tonne per annum PLA production facility on an area of ??135,000 square metres.

UAE Biotech will commence commercial operations in early 2025 and intends to start construction of its first PLA production plant in the UAE by 2026.
