BP has announced a final investment decision for its largest green hydrogen project to date at its Castellon refinery in Spain, but exactly what will be built and when is still unclear.

“At Castellon, together with our joint venture partner [Iberdrola], we are progressing through our first FID to develop and produce industrial-scale green hydrogen at our Castellon refinery,” BP CEO Murray Auchincloss said during the second-quarter results.

Although BP said back in February 2023 when announcing its HyVal cluster that the Castellon refinery would spend €2 billion on 2GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030, with at least 200MW installed by 2027, the oil giant has revealed it will only invest in 25MW of capacity for now.

BP also plans to FID a 100MW green hydrogen project at its Lingen refinery in Germany by the end of this year.

The facility, which will replace 40% of the grey hydrogen currently used in Lingen, was notified as an Important Project of Common European Interest and therefore eligible for significant state aid from the European Commission in February.
